5 simple wedding day tips to remember

We realize you have a lot to remember on your wedding day. But these are just 5 simple wedding tips to remember that we promise will make your wedding day run smoother. They’re simple enough that even your wedding party will remember too!

These are some of our best tricks of the wedding planner trade that we use for all our clients on their wedding days. These tips help our couples relax, look their best, and help the wedding photographer take the best shots!

1. Hold your bouquet with the pins facing toward you

Florists often put pearl pins on the stem of bouquets. This isn’t purely for decoration — these pins show you where you are supposed to hold your bouquet.

The pins are placed at the back of the bouquet, so that you can feel the pins with your thumb and know you are holding the bouquet correctly.

People often think that the pins indicate the front of the bouquet because they are the “prettier” side of the stems. However, your florist likely designed your bouquets to have a best side (the non-pin side). If you have the pin side out facing out, you’re probably not showing the ideal side.

Tip: If your wedding planner isn’t present, don’t forget to tell your photographer so that they photograph the best side of your bouquet.

Also? Some old-school florists will place the pins on the front side. And we have seen pins on both sides of the bouquet too! When in doubt, ask your florist to show you the best way to hold your bouquet.

2. Hold your bouquet at your belly button

Hold your bouquet way lower than you think.

You should hold your bouquet at your belly button level. This makes you look more relaxed in photos because you’re elongating your arms. And who doesn’t want photos where you and your besties look relaxed instead of tense?

3. Pin boutonnieres on your left side (the side of your heart)

There have been times where we had to fix incorrectly pinned boutonnieres, oh yes.

Boutonnieres are always placed on the left side of your body (so your right side if you are pinning on someone/their left) — on the side of your heart.

The flowers should face upward, never down, unless it’s some sort of design feature (…I don’t think this happens).

Our team places the boutonnieres onto our clients. But if people are doing it on their own, the trick is to use 2 pins to avoid the boutonniere from flopping around. Generally speaking, you place 1 pin at the bottom, pointing up, into and parallel to the stem. Place the 2nd pin from the top, pointing down, into and parallel to the stem.

You can also ask your florist to use magnets instead of pins. But, make sure you ask if anyone has a pacemaker because you cannot wear a magnet boutonniere with a pacemaker.

4. Fold Kleenex and hide it at your bouquet stems

Another purpose for those bouquet pins! We always have Kleenex or tissues on hand for our clients for those happy tears.

A sneaky way to hold your tissues is to fold them up into a neat rectangle and place at the back of your bouquet stems, where the pins are. It’s unlikely your photographer will snap a photo of your bouquets that closely, but if they do, then you won’t show a wad of Kleenex at the bottom of your bouquets.

5. Chew mints, not gum

Chewing mints has two purposes:

One, chewing something can take the edge off when you’re anxious. No matter how chill of a person you are, you’re probably going to be a bit nervous before you walk down the aisle. Chewing a mint helps distract your brain, even for a few minutes, allowing you to centre yourself and be present before walking down the aisle.

Two, you will have minty fresh breath for your big kiss.

Mints are the way to go because chewing gum looks unattractive, and is distracting when all eyes are on you. Plus, where are you supposed to put the gum before you walk down the aisle? Chew mints instead.

Bonus. Bread + Drink finger trick

At your dinner reception, which glass is your glass? Which plate do you grab your bread from? The right or left?

Use the finger trick and you will never be wrong! The ‘b’ on your left hand is the side of your bread and bread plate. The ‘d’ on your right hand is your drinks.
